My best advice (that beginners usually laugh at) is to practice a lot. Just take some time to throw as much as you can, without thinking about the finished product, and without getting frustrated. Think of it as exercise!
There's also an excellent book called "Thrown Pottery Techniques Revealed" it has cutaway photography and is really good for basic techniques and troubleshooting.

Yeah, it's easy to get frustrated when you're first starting, especially if you're in a class or studio with people who have more experience. Just keep practicing, watch what people are doing, and try not to get discouraged!
